News has just surfaced that the man who was convicted for murdering Yetunde Price- the elder sister of Venus and Serena Williams- has been released from prison. His trip to the penitentiary was a tad bit shorter than the Williams family was probably hoping for. Details On Killer’s Release Yetunde Price was murdered in a 2006 drive-by shooting. She had her whole life ahead of her, but it was tragically cut short when she was in the wrong place at the wrong time: Via Daily Mail: Former Southside Crips gang member Robert Maxfield shot registered nurse, Yetunde Price, in a drive-by shooting in September, 2003. Yetunde was hit in the back of the head with an AK-47 and died instantly in Compton, California, leaving her family devastated. Her killer is now a free man after completing his 15-year sentence early due to good behavior. Maxfield was released on parole from Deuel Vocational Institution in Tracy, California, on March 8 after getting his sentence cut for good behavior in jail. It was later reported that cops determined the intended target was her boyfriend, who escaped unharmed. As for Maxfield’s current legal standing now, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitations (CDCR), Vicky Waters, explained this to DM: “Robert Maxfield had a determinate sentence, which means he was released to parole supervision after completing his term. Maxfield was sentenced to 15 years, and was received by CDCR in May 2006. An inmate is eligible to receive good conduct credits – in this case, at the rate of 15%- for good behavior. Per the law, he was eligible for 15% credit off his sentence, and he also received 989 days of credit for time served while awaiting sentencing, time served post-sentencing before arrival to prison. He was paroled in March after serving his full-term of his sentence, as defined by law.” Yetunde shares the same mother as Venus and Serena, but different fathers. At the time of her death, she was not only a nurse, but she was the mother of two wonderful children, co-owned a hair salon, and worked part time as her superstar sisters’ personal assistant. Serena Addressed Sister’s Killer At Sentencing Hearing During the sentencing hearing for Robert Maxfield, at Compton Superior Court, Serena reluctantly spoke on behalf of her family, stating “I wasn’t going to speak today because it’s too hard for me to talk.” However, she chose to do so because she wanted Maxfield to “know that this was unfair to our family, and our family has always been positive and we always try to help people.” Why Was His Sentencing SO Short? So why was Yetunde’s killer only sentenced to 15 years, instead of life you ask? It’s because Maxfield pleaded ‘no contest’ to voluntary manslaughter, after two prior trials resulted in hung juries. At this point, it’s unclear when, or if, Serena and Venus’ family were made aware of Maxfield’s release, but according to the prison’s spokesperson, “Victims can register with CDCR’s Office of Victim and Survivor Rights and Services to receive resources, as well as notifications on an inmate’s parole actions or release.” Therefore, the Williams family probably knew months ago. The Yetunde Price Resource Center Even though the convicted killer of their beloved sis’ has another opportunity at life and Yetunde does not, Venus and Serena are making sure they keep her legacy alive. In 2016, the sisters opened the Yetunde Price Resource Center, a community center located in Compton, CA, dedicated to helping victims of violence and traumatic experiences get the resources they need.
May Yetunde Price continue to rest peacefully.
