Fans Are Not Feeling Andre Lyon's 'Ridiculous' Storyline On 'Empire'
2020 is the year when many of television's top shows will be leaving our screens forever, and it has some fans in their feelings. One show that is sure to be missed is ABC's prime time legal drama How To Get Away With Murder, starring the incomparable Viola Davis in a lead role as manipulative law school professor Annalise Keating. As that show is preparing for it's last five episodes FOX's hit show Empire is also on its way out, however one particular story line is not going over well with fans.
The End Of An Era
When Empire premiered in 2015 audiences were introduced to the dysfunctional Lyon family, head by Lucious and Cookie Lyon, portrayed by Academy Award nominated actors Terrence Howard and [Taraji P. Henson] respectively. Throughout the course of the show's six seasons there have been many story lines and poignant topics touched upon including issues within the LGBTQ community, the impact incarceration has on families and mental health issues. The latter specifically dealt with eldest son Andre Lyon's bipolar disorder, and at times the things he goes through have lead to some of Empire's more ludicrous moments.
There's Too Much Going On Now
This in no way detracts from Trai Byers' performance as Andre, however at this point fans are beginning to get tired of Andre's antics. Showbiz Cheatsheet reports that the plot is beginning to get a little ridiculous as Andre's mind becomes more and more overtaken by the ghost of his deceased illegitimate older half-brother Jeff Kingsley, portrayed by AZ Kelsey.
The majority of the final season has revolved around the two brothers and Andre’s terrorizing behavior while under the control of Kingsley. Many fans have complained about their story line as they feel it doesn’t connect.

The Writers 'Threw It Away'
One Reddit user pointed out that Kingsley was not an “elite masterminded criminal” while alive, so it doesn’t make sense for him to become a “murderous person” who has taken over Andre.
They also feel that Andre has already suffered enough, and he had a good ending with Teri, but the writers “threw it away with the Kingsley storyline.”
Another thing people aren't really feeling is the way the show depicts a person with bipolar disorder, and are accusing Empire of doing too much with Andre's over-the-top portrayal.
Praise For Byers As An Actor
But it's not all bad reviews for Empire's final season. Many people have been praising Byers' performance and the way he can deliver the goods portraying a character who has had his fair share of trauma since the beginning of the series. One user tweeted "Trai Byers is such an amazing actor. His range is phenomenal. The fact that he can portray someone who is having a psychotic break and then can switch to someone who’s in control shows how talented he is!".
When Empire finally comes to a close it will be very interesting to see what Trai Byers does next with his promising career.
