Actor Jahmil French, best known for his role as Dave Turner in hit teen drama ‘Degrassi: The Next Generation,’ has died.
He was 29.

Reports of French’s passing first circulated early Tuesday morning, but a cause of death was not revealed. The news was later confirmed by his friend and Soundtrack co-star Chisme Chica, who tweeted, “I can confirm my good friend, co-worker, and all around inspiration, Jahmil French, passed away yesterday. Only posting because I see the story getting out there. I will have more to say about him later. Right now we’re all just processing this devastating news.”
Shortly after Chica confirmed reports of Jahmil French’s death, tributes began pouring in from his co-stars, including Christina Milian, Christine Prosperi, and Annie Clark.
“You will be missed,” wrote Milian, French’s Soundtrack co-star, under the actor’s last Instagram, a smiling selfie posted in January. “Rest peacefully King.”
Clark, who played Fiona Coyne in Degrassi: The Next Generation, shared a video of French dancing on stage. “Heartbroken over the loss of our friend Jahmil French,” she wrote. “So full of energy and fun. He was always dancing. A true talent and great friend.
Fellow Degrassi alum Christine Prosperi (Imogen Moreno) re-posted various tributes and videos on her Instagram Story, including one from Jessica Tyler. “Our hearts are heavy … Though not all of us have kept in close contact since Degrassi ended – and not for any reason other than the simple fact that time and life go on – at the end of the day, we are a family,” she wrote. “You are so loved, Jahmil. My heart goes out to you and your family. Rest in Peace. Your kindness and bright light will not be forgotten.”
French first made a name for himself in Degrassi spinoff series Degrassi: The Next Generation, in which he starred as Dave Turner from 2009 to 2013. Over the next few years, he appeared in various major productions, including The Divide, At First Light, and Boost. He most recently appeared in Netflix drama Soundtrack, which was released in December 2019.
