FOURTEEN years ago when Michael DaCosta began his career as singer Massy, jumping on the hottest dancehall beats was his focus.
But rubbing shoulders with musicians from different countries has changed the way he now looks at music. So much so that his latest project is a roots-reggae album.
"Recently, I have worked with people from overseas and find that they love roots-reggae because it lasts," Massy, 31, told Splash. "That's cool with me 'cause I want to make music that lasts."
Amit Sagie from Israel is one of the foreigners with whom Massy has found common musical ground. Sagie is co-producer of the untitled set which will be released by Fyah Key Music, a company Massy operates with Sayan Gulino of Bali.
The album is expected to be released in May. Three songs from it - Tek it Easy, Miss Jamaica and On My Way - have already been launched.
Massy says he jammed to the hardcore sounds of Buju Banton, Sizzla and Spragga Benz while he was a student at Campion College. After leaving high school, he got into music seriously and was among the first artistes who recorded for Daseca Productions.
Music took a backseat to the books nine years ago when he entered St Johns University in Minnesota. He eventually earned a degree in audio and video production.
