Selma Blair reveals she calls her cane her 'dance partner' amid her battle with multiple sclerosis... as she stars in new Gap campaign
Selma Blair revealed she calls her cane her 'dance partner' as she opened up about her relationship with the device amid her battle with multiple sclerosis.
The Cruel Intentions actress, 50, described how the tool has helped her overcome her 'compromised' movement after her 2018 diagnosis with the condition.
In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, Blair revealed how beneficial the tool has been to her in light of her health struggles.
'Movement has been so important to me my whole life,' she told the magazine. 'I was a gymnast. I always wanted to be a dancer, but I never had any talent, never even took a lesson, and then to have my movement compromised...'
Blair posed with her cane as part of her new campaign with retail giant the Gap.
Speaking of photographing her life - 'imperfections' and all - she told the publication: 'I need to be comfortable in my skin to show other people that there are all these possibilities of how you can present yourself that makes you feel good.'
'Fashion really was the thing that made me feel attractive to tell you the truth,' she added. 'It made me feel anything was possible.'
Speaking of fashion, Selma, who once worked at the Gap, has returned to the retail giant to serve as one of the faces of its new ICONS campaign.
'This makes me so happy. I have not felt happy about photographs or a campaign in this way in a while,' she told People.
'For me, Gap is something I do truly live in and love, and to be included in this … it's a day that I'm really happy will live in a campaign,' she added.
Selma also opened up about how her 'glitches and frailties' have forced her to embrace a more 'simple' routine in light of her battle with MS.
'I keep things really simple,' she told the site. 'I jump in the pool in the morning to wake myself up. I put on my white tank top and my khakis. And that carries me through the day until I add to it. As I wake up more and more, and as people come into my day, I'll put on another piece of jewelry or then grab my cane instead of having my [service] dog, and it just evolves as my day goes on.'
Selma's beauty routine has also undergone an adjustment. The actress has alopecia, but is able to conceal it by either styling her hair a certain way or using a turban.
She is also aiding in the development of assistive makeup items which may streamline the process of makeup application for herself and others.
Fortunately, Selma is able to look at the bright side when she does make a mistake.
'I'm never embarrassed when I make big, funny, blotto messes,' she told People. 'I'm just not anymore. To me, trying means everything now. I used to be a little snobby about that.'
'By nighttime, I look very interesting. I have a turban. I have two canes. Really, it's a whole thing. I don't mind my eccentricities now.'
