Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, 24, is in "critical condition" in the hospital after suffering cardiac arrest when he collapsed mid-game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night, his team said.
This was so sad and hard to watch.
Damar Hamlin's heart being restarted on the field was very important, Dr. Sanjay Gupta says
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, noted this morning that it's very important that medical personnel were able to restart Damar Hamlin's heart on the field while giving him CPR immediately after he suffered a cardiac arrest.
"Just the time is of such critical importance here in terms of taking care of someone like this. The response from the medical team was fast and seconds and minutes matter in a situation like this," Gupta said.
Earlier today, the Buffalo Bills issued a statement confirming Hamlin's heartbeat was "restored" on the field:
"Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in the Buffalo Bills' game versus the Cincinnati Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition."
Gupta pointed out that it was crucial to restart the heart and resume "the process of normal pumping." He said it sounds like that happened which he called "an optimistic sign," adding Hamlin is still in critical condition at this time.
