Update: Police have enough physical evidence to charge Jonathan Majors, despite victim recanting her statement...
Jonathan Majors was released from jail on Saturday evening hours after his arrest on domestic violence charges.
Majors, 33, was seen leaving the courthouse wearing a face mask and a baseball cap with the words “FREEDOM FREEDOM” on the front.
He is charged with two counts of assault in the third degree, aggravated harassment, and attempt assault.
The Creed III star was accompanied by his defense attorney Priya Chaudhry, who shielded him with a large umbrella outside the courthouse. Chaudhry insisted her client is a “completely innocent” victim and that his accuser, believed to be the actor’s girlfriend, recanted her allegations.
According to a statement by the NYPD, Majors was arrested after a woman called 911 from her apartment near the corner of West 22nd Street and 8th Avenue Saturday morning.
She told arriving officers that the actor “strangled” and “assaulted” her during a dispute the night before.
According to TMZ, the girlfriend confronted Majors about texting another woman after drinking at a bar in Brooklyn Friday night. She claims he grabbed her hand, slapped her face and strangled her when she tried to peek at his cellphone in the taxi.
“Jonathan Majors is completely innocent and is provably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows,” attorney Chaudhry told Fox News Digital.
“We are quickly gathering and presenting evidence to the District Attorney with the expectation that all charges will be dropped imminently,” she continued.
“This evidence includes video footage from the [taxi] where this episode took place, witness testimony from the driver and others who both saw and heard the episode, and most importantly, two written statements from the woman recanting these allegations,” the statement continued.
However, female victims of domestic violence are notorious for recanting their allegations against their abusers. Therefore, police rely on physical evidence, such as visible injuries, videos, and/or witness accounts.
A statement by the NYPD noted the victim sustained minor injuries to her head and neck.
The U.S. Army pulled Majors’s “Be All You Can Be” ad campaign following his domestic violence arrest.
According to THR, the Army had already released 2 ads featuring the buff actor before his arrest.
A senior marketing official told The Army Times that another round of ads featuring Majors were slated for release in August.
However, those ads have been pulled because domestic violence doesn’t align with the Army’s core values.
Majors is best known for his roles in the films Creed III, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (as Kang the Conqueror) and HBO’s Lovecraft Country.
In his acting debut in the ABC series When We Rise, Majors portrayed a gay activist. However, he insists he’s not gay. Majors is pictured attending a press junket for When We Rise, presented by SCAD on February 3, 2017 in Atlanta.
