No good deed goes unpunished. Earlier this week, Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. tried to spread a little holiday cheer in the locker room by passing out Beats by Dre headphones to teammates, coaches and staff. But the allure of free stuff proved too much even for a group that, on average, makes more than $1 million a year.
In theory, everyone would get a pair. In reality, it appears greed won out, at least for several veterans, including defense tackle Cullen Jenkins, who reportedly grabbed two pair for his daughters.
This did not sit well with defensive end Damontre Moore and an altercation ensued.
The incident was the latest in a long line of issues for Moore, the 2013 third-round pick who never lived up to expectations.
ESPN.com's Dan Graziano reports that Moore had behavior and maturity concerns that never improved during his three seasons with the team, despite coaches and administrators speaking with the defensive end on several occasions -- both this year and before.
And a source told the New York Daily News that Moore had been fined "many times" this season for disciplinary reasons, adding that "this wasn't the first time" he had an altercation with a teammate.
"We made the move today [to release Moore] in the interest of both parties," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said in a statement released by the team.
It's also worth noting that Jenkins, who isn't without blame here, has his own issues. Last Sunday, he and Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall got into a shoving match because, as Marshall later explained, Jenkins was trash-talking his wife.
"There's not enough money on this earth for someone to disrespect my wife," Marshall said. "I just tried to take it out in between the lines. I don't care about anything at that point. He thought maybe I had four or five girls or something. But I'm happily married to one woman. I love my wife, Michi Marshall, and I will fight to the end for her."
Jenkins later apologized to Marshall, though there's no word if he apologized to Moore -- or if Moore got a free pair of Beats as his parting gift.
