Boxer Manny Pacquiao said his April 9 bout against Timothy Bradley will be his finale. “This is my last fight,” Pacquiao said on Thursday in New York.
After losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr. by unanimous decision in May, Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 knockouts) had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. Pacquiao said despite losing power in his shoulder in the fourth round, he still thinks he beat Mayweather. “It’s not that easy that I lost that fight. I threw a lot of punches and he threw a few punches,” he said.
The 37-year-old Pacquiao, who is currently a congressman in his native Philippines, said he felt like it was an ideal time to step out of the ring and engage fully in politics. “I started boxing to help [my family] and now I will end my boxing career because I want to help my countrymen.” Pacquiao said he would begin his senatorial campaign after the Bradley bout, leaving him about a month before the May 9 general election.
Pacquiao laughed when asked if he had been following the U.S. presidential campaigns. “I know Donald Trump,” he said. “He’s a friendly guy but I don’t want to get involved in politics here. We have our own politics [at home.]”
