Angry Trayvon Martin Supporters Call for Boycott of Kobe Bryant
NBA superstar Kobe Bryant is in hot water for comments he made to the New Yorker magazine about slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.
Kobe seemed to sympathize with the teen’s killer, George Zimmerman, when he used Trayvon as an analogy to explain his belief that American blacks choose their battles based on skin color rather than studying the merits of a situation before reacting irrationally.
“I won’t react to something just because I’m supposed to, because I’m an African-American,” Bryant said. “That argument doesn’t make any sense to me. So we want to advance as a society and a culture, but, say, if something happens to an African-American we immediately come to his defense? Yet you want to talk about how far we’ve progressed as a society? Well, we’ve progressed as a society, then don’t jump to somebody’s defense just because they’re African-American. You sit and you listen to the facts just like you would in any other situation, right? So I won’t assert myself.”
The reaction from the black community was swift.
From Fox News:
Although the 35-year-old Bryant, who spent much of his childhood in Italy, where his father was a professional basketball player, did not take a position on the merits of the case against Zimmerman, critics came down hard. Hall of Fame NFL running back Jim Brown told the article’s author Bryant doesn’t understand the African-American culture.
“[Kobe] is somewhat confused about culture, because he was brought up in another country,” Brown said.
On Thursday, self-described civil rights activist Najee Ali, director of Project Islamic H.O.P.E., angrily called for a boycott of all things Bryant.
“African American youth should no longer buy Bryant’s jerseys or shoes and should boycott all products he endorses,” Ali said in a statement. “Bryant doesn’t identify with the struggle that our African-American youth face nationally. So why should we continue to support Bryant who has never truly identified with the African American experience.”
The last time Bryant was dragged this unmercifully by the public he was brought to tears. This is a young man whose only connection to the black community are his black parents.
In response to the backlash, Bryant tweeted, “Travon (sic) Martin was wronged THATS my opinion and thats what I believe the FACTS showed. The system did not work #myopinion #tweetURthoughts.”

Oh monalisa where do I start you see in our culture as I am an African American woman our men in the black race has seen it all from the deep south hanging our men on the tree and just the out right killings of them being less then who they are by some. This case with Trayvon being murdered in cold blood was wrong on every hand this man felt like he was being threaten by him just because he was walking around with a bad of candy and a soda drink in his hands he felt he had to kill this young man sorry but that made no sense. Kobe can make up in his mind that it wasn't wrong but as a black man himself he better be thanking the good lord up stairs that he has only daughters because he would be praying night and day for his son or sons to grow up and reach his age of 30 plus years. You don't and you shouldn't kill someone because of the color of his skin and that's what he did and more and more will be killed for just being black these are the hard facts in our world today. Too me Kobe is way out of touch and he should open his eyes because not so long ago when he was found cheating on his still wife Vanessa and his other woman was white he got called out for that his career had changed from the it man in basketball to falling from grace he got a taste of it when he was being blasted for his cheating ways and it was the white media so he needs to think before he passes judgement. Just my 2 cents C

I just wonder if Kobe thinks Whites choose their battles based on skin color. hmmm I think he just said he is an african-american and belong to that society. but he is also human who has his own mind. so as an african - american who belong in a particular society he suppose to act one whom he is thinks what's right. It's right for him but not for other.if you know what I mean.. on the other side he easily said that because he is not a family of Trayvon who hurts so much for what happen. please don't hate me

First I don't hate you, you are only answering the question about him but in all honesty he's just a bit out of touch here. You see he can feel what he wants to feel about this but he of all people should know how hard it is for a young black man to make it and that Zimmerman person really wasn't all white he has some latin in him I think but if you look like you could pass all the white people saw in this case was he felt threaten in some States there is a Stand Your Ground Law that if you feel your life might be on the line then take out your gun a shoot to kill. Trayvon wasn't carrying a gun he wore a hoodie and he was black that's all it was so Zimmerman had to kill him sorry but that doesn't set to well with some of us. He had NO RIGHT to take his life and since then he Zimmerman has been showing signs of guilt he's been doing the wrong things his wife left him he's had the police at his door about his girlfriend claiming he's been threatening her while having guns in his home and he's been caught speeding around FL so his guilt is catching up with him if you ask me. And once again Monalisa I don't hate you as a matter of fact I am enjoying our thoughts about this you are learning more about America and I love sharing this with you.
C : )
PS : There was another case were a Black woman did the Stand Your Groud Law she really felt threaten and killed the person but guess what she's in jail but Zimmerman isn't I wonder why ?

Yeah I learn something here, thanks C... And I feel you that. Maybe lack of evidence and connection what the killer has.
