THe NYPD shut down a store that was set to sell the new $250 Supreme/Nike Air Foamposite sneakers on Thursday.
Police dispersed about 300 sneaker heads (mostly blacks and Hispanics) who lined up outside Supreme New York on Lafayette Street Thursday morning. Most of them were unaware that the NYPD cancelled the sale of the colorful basketball shoes. The store posted a notice of cancellation on its website on Wednesday that read:
“Due to concern for public safety, NYPD has forced us to not sell the Supreme/Nike Foamposites and accompanying clothing in our New York Store. These items will be available on supremenewyork.com tomorrow (Thursday) at 11am EST.”
Historically, store releases of NIKE Air Jordans and other high demand products have resulted in riots, injuries, and even deaths.
Civic leaders in major cities have long called for NIKE to put an end to the much-hyped store releases due to the risk of injuries.
