If you were a fan of HBO’s Sex In The City, you might be happy to hear that something similar is airing on the OWN network with characters that may be a little more relatable to black women.
“Love In The City” is a docu-series starring professionals, Kiyah Wright (a celebrity stylist and the center of the bunch), Bershan Shaw (founder of social networking site URAWARRIOR), Chenoa Maxwell (actress of Hav Plenty fame) and Tiffany Jones (founder of the Pink Chose Me Foundation).
Previously called “Crazy. Sexy. Life.,” the series will follow the four women as they juggle their professional and personal lives in the fast paced flow of New York City. The friends have known each other for more than ten years and support each other through life’s successes and setbacks. Tiffany and Bershan are both breast cancer survivors who are using their stories of survival to spread awareness and provide hope to other women. The show will bring a good amount of conflict like any real life friendship, but it promises to balance any drama with support and sisterly love. Gabrielle Union is scheduled to make an appearance on a future episode.
Aisha I. Jefferson of Xfinity, recently revealed her thoughts on the pilot:
“The relationships seem very genuine, even though there’s tension between some of the ladies. Doesn’t seem terribly forced like some other reality shows (they shall remain nameless…for now). Another thing I like is that the women seem more vulnerable and revealing of their shortcomings. For example, Bershan admits she’s insecure, Chenoa and her husband struggle to conceive–and it’s a strain on their marriage (they even discussed having a second wife–wow!), Tiffany’s breast cancer returns and Kiyah unapologetically wants a baby sans a husband. So, yeah, this show definitely brings a little something different to the table compared to other reality shows targeting an African-American audience.”
Kind of feels like deja-vu to us. We hope this show can bring something different than short lived shows like Empire Girls or Bravo’s popular Blood, Sweat and Heels. We can only watch so many edited scenes of meeting for drinks, blind dates, and catty gossip. If anything, we at least hope it has great shoes like Sex and the City.
“Love In The City” premieres on the OWN Network on Saturday, April 12th 10/9c.
