The beleaguered National Football League can’t seem to get anything right. The NFL was once again targeted by the liberal media and football fans when an official flagged Kansas City Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah for praying in the end zone after a touchdown during ABC’s Monday Night Football telecast between the New England Patriots and the Chiefs.
Praying after a touchdown is a common occurrence in the NFL. Officials often looked the other way when former Denver Broncos quarterback TIm Tebow got down on one knee to pray during games.
But Abdullah is a devout Muslim, so he was penalized for “unsportsmanlike conduct” for praying after he returned a Tom Brady interception for a touchdown.
The ref took exception to Abdullah falling to his knees and bowing his head in prayer in the end zone. The exact offense was “unsportsmanlike conduct, going to the ground.”
It is unlikely that the NFL will uphold the penalty against Abdullah and the Chiefs. As former ref and NFL rules expert Mike Pereira pointed out last year, players are not penalized for going to the ground.
Within minutes of the flag being thrown, Abdullah’s name was trending on social media giant Twitter.com. Even though the majority of “tweets” were heavily in favor of Abdullah, a few Twitter users sided with the refs:
The Chiefs crushed the Patriots 41-14 at Arrowhead Stadium. Abdullah, 29, is a married father of 2 children — a son, Jalaal, and a daughter, Kameela.
