Her story as told to us :
Sheila E. released her memoir The Beat of My Own Drum. But while many have focused on the book’s details surrounding her engagement to Prince, there’s one romance (and near marriage) the public hasn’t raised an eye at.
"Pretty much, I was engaged to Carlos Santana. That was huge and no one knew about that," said the 56-year-old drummer, who dated a married Santana when she was 18. "I thought people would be talking about that, and it's more about, 'She was engaged to Prince!' Really?'"
Opening up about her love affairs with the two iconic musicians at least helped her realize what she’s attracted to: guitar players. She's considering turning the memoirs into a movie and meanwhile promises follow-ups in book form. "I'll be able to share more stories on the next three to five books," she told Billboard.
Along with her romantic relationships, the musician's memoir features stories that include working with Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie and Ringo Starr, and being raped at age 5.
Sheila E. rose to fame in 1984 with the release of her Prince-produced hit “Glamorous Life.” She’d also make her film debut a year later in the classic hip hop movie Krush Groove.
Drummer Sheila E. has confirmed she and Prince were engaged in the 1980s.
In her new memoir, “The Beat of My Own Drum,” the percussionist details the night the “When Doves Cry” hit maker proposed to her during a concert in Europe in 1987, according to the New York Daily News.
She writes, “(He turned around half way into ‘Purple Rain’ and mouthed), ‘Marry me?’
“He blew me a kiss, turned to the audience, and took the most amazing guitar solo ever. For the rest of that year my relationship with Prince was a dream. … We were with each other all day and all night.”
Following the engagement, the couple split its time between Los Angeles and his native Minneapolis, but decided to keep the impending nuptials secret.
However, by the 1990s, the couple’s relationship had deteriorated following numerous infidelities. The final blow to the romance came when Prince allegedly refused to allow Sheila to attend her grandmother’s funeral.
She explains, “He was my boss, he reminded me. He signed the pay checks.”
