Looking at this case study I think this is a very sticky topic but I do think Vaccination could be a better choice this could get out of hand if something isn't done.



Measles Cases

From January 1 to February 6, 2015, 121 people from 17 states and Washington DC were reported to have measles [AZ (7), CA (88), CO (1), DC (1), DE (1), IL (3), MI (1), MN (1), NE (2), NJ (1), NY (2), NV (2), OR (1), PA (1), SD (2) TX (1), UT (2), WA (4)]*. Most of these cases [103 cases (85%)] are part of a large, ongoing multi-state outbreak linked to an amusement park in California.

The United States experienced a record number of measles cases during 2014, with 644 cases from 27 states reported to CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD). This is the greatest number of cases since measles elimination was documented in the U.S. in 2000.

Measles cases and outbreaks from January 1-February 6, 2015. 121 cases reported in 17 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Washington. One outbreak represents 85% of reported cases this year. Annual reported cases have ranged from a low of 37 in 2004 to a high of 644 in 2014. Data are provisional for cases in 2015.
•The majority of the people who got measles were unvaccinated.
•Measles is still common in many parts of the world including some countries in Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa.
•Travelers with measles continue to bring the disease into the U.S.
•Measles can spread when it reaches a community in the U.S. where groups of people are unvaccinated.


Measles Outbreaks

Outbreaks in countries to which Americans often travel can directly contribute to an increase in measles cases in the U.S.

Reasons for an increase in cases some years:
•2015: The United States is currently experiencing a large, multi-state measles outbreak linked to an amusement park in California.
•2014: The U.S. experienced 23 measles outbreaks in 2014, including one large outbreak of 383 cases, occurring primarily among unvaccinated Amish communities in Ohio. Many of the cases in the U.S. in 2014 were associated with cases brought in from the Philippines, which experienced a large measles outbreak. •2013: The U.S. experienced 11 outbreaks in 2013, three of which had more than 20 cases, including an outbreak with 58 cases. For more information see Measles — United States, January 1-August 24, 2013.
•2011: In 2011, more than 30 countries in the WHO European Region reported an increase in measles, and France was experiencing a large outbreak. Most of the cases that were brought to the U.S. in 2011 came from France. For more information see Measles — United States, January-May 20, 2011.

I remember when I have measles when I was only 12 years old... The fever and headache and stomach ache in 1! Whew

Why is it that I never heard of kids getting sick from vaccinations before? I got my kids all the vaccinations I was told they needed as well as my friends doing the same thing with their kids. Nobody ever got sick. Is there something different about vaccines today or is there something different about kids? The same goes for peanut butter. Don't know how we would have raised kids without peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Nowadays peanut butter is a no-no food.

MMR vaccines are for measles prevention but not 100% safe. There are still possible the kids can get measles especially if they have low immune system...

Well ladies your right but I tell you it's better to be safe then sorry they also say this can cause Autism Jenny McCarthy is the one who put this bug in the ears of mothers who have an Autistic child as she has. The fear of this is getting out of hand some say it's a better choice to get your child vaccinated and some say it isn't we were vaccinated I mean in our health history Polio was the worst thing to have back in the 30's and 40's it has snice been wiped out because of getting the vaccinations needed to stop that epidemic. Disneyland had started this you know how many kids go there and how many cases are up in this country it's not that hard to save face I don't want my kids if I had any exposed to this if your child gives this to mine that's not fair either. But if both parents got the kids vaccinated then as I stated here better safe then sorry.

Baltimore-area doctors made a public stand in favor of vaccines Monday, standing literally shoulder to shoulder to urge holdouts to get their kids vaccinated against measles.

"Ours is an unequivocal message. Vaccines are safe, they are effective, and they save lives every single day," Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen said as the group stood up in front of a seminar about measles at the Johns Hopkins University school of public health.

"The Disneyland outbreak raises the real risk that measles may come roaring back. We have come too far to let that happen," the group said in a statement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 121 people have been reported infected with measles so far this year. One outbreak — the one linked to Disneyland — is responsible for 85 percent of the cases, CDC says.

The outbreak has renewed a focus on parents who refuse to vaccinate for religious and philosophical reasons. Many have doubts fueled by anti-vaccine groups and websites.

Last year, the U.S. had the most cases of measles since 1994 with 644 cases. More than half were from a single outbreak among Amish people in Ohio who were infected when relief workers carried the virus back from the Philippines. But the average has only been about 60-70 cases a year, so with 121 cases already on record so early in the year, doctors are worried.

CDC says it's clear that clusters of deliberately unvaccinated people are to blame for the outbreak and for most outbreaks. Unvaccinated travelers — most of them Americans returning from abroad — carry the virus back to the United States.

"It's critical to make sure your child is up to date on all vaccines," said Dr. Steven Czinn, chairman of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. "I ask you to review the data. There have been dozens of studies in last 10 years that demonstrate the safety and the efficacy of these vaccines," he added

"Common sense will dictate that you need to get your children vaccinated."

Polls suggest most Americans do support and believe in vaccines. A study released Monday by Pew Research found that 83 percent of the U.S. public agrees that vaccines for diseases such as measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) are safe for healthy children. The survey found that 92 percent of college graduates agree that vaccines are safe but this drops to 77 percent of people with a high school degree or less.

Nationally, about 91 percent of kids get the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine before they start preschool.
