Another classic rock legend has left this world. Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship founder Paul Kantner, passed away at the age of 74 as a result of multiple organ failure and septic shock following a heart attack he had earlier in the week.
Forming in 1965, Jefferson Airplane were at the forefront in psychedelic rock with hits like "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit." The band was also fortunate enough to have the talented vocals of Grace Slick and Marty Balin featured in their lineup.
Kantner's Jefferson Airplane spinoff, Jefferson Starship also produced some memorable hits like "Miracles" and "Count on Me." Even as of now the band is still active, with Kantner performing with them as early as last year, although he had to pull back on appearances since his heart attack in March 2015.
Neil Portnoy, president of the Recording Academy released the following statement:
"Paul Kantner was a folk/rock giant and integral part of the 1960s rock scene. A founding member of Jefferson Airplane, whoa re receiving our Lifetime Achievement Award this year, Paul was a key architect in the development of what became known as the San Francisco Sound. A multifaceted singer, songwriter, guitarist, and performer, he was essential to the success of such classic Airplane songs as "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit." The music community has lost a true icon, and we share our deepest condolences with Paul's family and friends, and with those who had the privilege of collaborating with him.
Rest In Peace
