Looks like Empire creator and filmmaker, Lee Daniels, is not the only one in partnerships with TV networks these days. Oscar winning filmmaker, John Singleton, moved his talents to television and partnered with FX to create a drama pilot surrounding the crack and cocaine epidemic set in 1980’s Los Angeles and its cultural impact. The pilot is co-written and executive produced by Eric Amadio. Singleton also directed an episode of Empire during the first season.
Singleton stated about his move to TV,
I have always been fascinated with that volatile moment in time before crack changed everything,” said Singleton. “It’s a tense, insane and sexy era that touched every aspect of our culture. I couldn’t have better partners for this journey.
While the show is still in the production stages, Jill Scott and Lauren London have been added to the roster as the pilot’s newest cast members. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scott will play Sharon “Cissy” Saint, the no-nonsense mother of Franklin (Damson Idris). Frustrated in both her personal and professional lives, Cissy has sacrificed her dreams to give Franklin opportunities she never had. London, meanwhile, will play Louise Saint, Franklin’s party-girl aunt.
