STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- As Hurricane Matthew hits Jamaica and Haiti on Monday, meteorologists are continuing to track the path of this massive storm, which could impact the Atlantic coast of the United States later in the week.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami is reporting that the center of the storm is expected to pass just east of Jamaica and near or over the southwestern tip of Haiti early Tuesday before heading to eastern Cuba.
After moving through the islands of the Caribbean into Wednesday, the storm will likely take a more northwestward path across the Bahamas from Wednesday into Friday, according to Accuweather.com.
Forecasters are saying it is still too early to tell the exact impact of the storm on the United States.
But according to The Weather Channel, the Carolinas and Florida are bracing for a potential impact.
However, even if Matthew does not hit the southeastern U.S. coast directly, dangerous and damaging seas and surf are expected, as the storm is expected to take a northwestward turn, according to Accuweather.com.
